Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival organized by the Ministry of Culture, Directorate General of State Opera and Ballet, will be held on 8 June - 6 July 2002. Aspendos Theater is the best preserved amphitheater, not only in Anatolia, but also the whole of Europe. On the shores of the Mediterranean, near Antalya, the theater and its festival will bring together lots of performers and audiences of different nationalities and religions, who speak the same language of arts and music. In the 9th year of the festival, 11 performances will be staged on the theatre, 4 by foreign companies. The famous opera by Giuseppe Verdi, "Aida", will be staged by Vincenzo Grisostomi, the Principal Director of the State Opera and Ballet. This will be the opening performance of the festival on June 8. Foreign guest companies this year in the festival are the Prague State Opera (Czech Republic), who will perform "Nabucco" by Verdi, Nevai Theatre from Uzbekistan performing Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake"; the Spanish National Ballet performing "Fuenteovejuna" by A.Gades; and the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet performing "Romeo and Juliet" by Prokofiev. As in the previous festivals, the Istanbul, Izmir, Mersin and Antalya State Opera and Ballet Companies will also participate in the festival. Mozart's opera the "Abduction from the Seraglio" (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) of W.A.Mozart, which has been in the Ankara State Opera and Ballet repertory since April, will be staged in Aspendos, using its original German libretto. Bellini's "Norma" will be performed by the Izmir State Opera and Ballet, Verdi's "Tady of the Camellias" will be performed by the Antalya State Opera and Ballet, "Murat IV" of 0.Demiriþ will be performed by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, and Puccini's "Tosca" will be performed by the Mersin State Opera and Ballet. The 9th Antalya Festival certainly will be a memorable event.
